  • Turmeric Black Crowns

    This is a very rare form of turmeric that comes from Northern and Eastern India. Very much in demand it is being over harvested and is also the subject of extensive Bio-Piracy in the pharmaceutical industry.
    Black Turmeric is not used as a spice or flavouring, but rather as a medicinal herb. It tastes strongly of pine and turpentine and leaves a bitter aftertaste in your mouth.
    It is used to treat a variety of ailments in Eastern medicine.
    The crowns will give you a larger initial harvest and if grown in good conditions will probably give you a respectable harvest in the first year.

    Alpinia galangal

    There are two main types of Galangal, the greater and the lesser.
    The greater galangal is the larger of the two and is more pungent with a strong peppery-pine scent and flavour. Originally from the island of Java, greater galangal is used either fresh or dried and ground-up in much the same way as ginger.
    The robust flavour of galangal is perfectly paired with Thai, Malaysian and Indonesian cooking as well as often being used as an Eastern medicinal herb.

    We are really excited about this awesome heirloom turmeric variety, lovely slender orange skinned turmeric with a very low fibre content, perfect for using fresh, thinly sliced or grated into your dish. The beautiful orange skin really sets this variety apart, the thin skin is also a great bonus as you do not need to peel this variety.

  • Turmeric Root

    Curcuma longa

    Our Turmeric is ready to plant and will probably have a few eyes by the time you receive it.
    Best grown in light or partial shade. Turmeric is part of the ginger family and if you break a fresh piece, you can smell a definite ginger scent.
    Plant in well improved soil with added bonemeal (Talborne’s BonePhos is perfect) and keep well watered but not constantly wet.
    If you are in a frost region, then plant in pots so that they can overwinter indoors on a sunny windowsill.
    The plant get to about 1 m tall and has stunning flowers! Once the flowers have died down, it’s time to look at lifting your crop.
    Lift the roots, rinse them and clean with a soft brush and allow to dry in a cool place. Use the damaged pieces first.
    Save some for replanting, you will never need to buy turmeric in the shops again.
